Events to be held in Hebrew!
On May 1 and May 2, the National Library of Israel will hold special events in honor of Israeli Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Day. The events will feature tours with exhibits of rare items and lectures on ghetto music and the rescue of Jewish texts stolen by the Nazis, which were brought to Jerusalem.
The events will include a presentation of the last known letter written by Hannah Szenes, sent to her brother George after she had parachuted into enemy territory along with British forces fighting in World War II. The letter was sent on May 20, 1944, about two and a half weeks before she crossed the border into Hungary, where she was caught and later executed.
Items highlighting the cultural life of the Vilna Ghetto, including records from the remarkably active library and a poster for a concert, will also be displayed, as will items stolen by the Nazis that were brought to the National Library in Jerusalem following the war.
Renowned musicologist Dr. Gila Flam, head of the National Library of Israel's Music Department and National Sound Archive, will discuss songs from the Vilna and Lodz Ghettos; and National Library expert Daniel Lipson will discuss how texts stolen by the Nazis found their way to the National Library in Jerusalem.
