“Notes on the Temple” is a manuscript by the illustrious scientist Isaac Newton dated between 1675 and 1685. These pages contain notes about the Jewish Temple and the numerous religious rituals that took place there. The manuscript is written in Latin and includes Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek words. On the left-hand side is the verse: “Blessed is the name of His glory, forever and ever.” According to the Midrash, Moses heard the angels say this verse to God when he went up to Mount Sinai to receive the tablets of the Covenant.
In addition to his work in mathematics and physics, Isaac Newton was an ardent theology scholar. Like many other scholars of the time, Newton learned Hebrew in order to read original Hebrew manuscripts.
