Jerusalem, the Holy Four-Cornered City

Jerusalem die heilige viereckete Stadt, in Grund gelegt und eigentlich abgemalet‎

Heinrich Bünting, Helmstadt 1585

Heinrich Bünting's map of Jerusalem, drawn originally in 1581 is an imaginary map, depicting the city in the time of Jesus. Like Adam Reisner's map in 1563, the map was made according to Josephus Flavius' description of the city, providing a graphic (mis)interpretation of the three walls which surrounded the city. This simple map developed later into a very detailed and rich genre, as can be seen in Adrichom's and Sayer's maps.
