Schwarze Gesänge – Dark Songs (1992/2004) is a collection of songs for voice and piano set to texts by Else Lasker-Schüler. These somber songs reflect the atmosphere that permeates the poetess' later works. In her settings, the composer expresses the dark and pessimistic character of the songs with subtle, inward-looking and transparent textures in a tonal language, resembling Schubert's Lieder. The cycle was originally written for the alto Mira Zakai in 1992. A version for soprano was prepared specially for Rona Israel-Kolatt in 2004.
The Rona Israel-Kolatt recording also contains song number 4 "Ich liege wo am Wegrand uebermattet" (I lie at a Roadside Overcome) which was omitted in the Mira Zakai performance and recording.
