    The Jerusalem Regional Planning Committee approved the Local Town Planning Scheme for the National Library parcel (no. 15050). The plan permits the construction of a public building on the parcel (a zoning change) and specifies the lines of the building and its height.

    - The date for submission is Monday, 16 April 2012 between the hours of 9:00 to 19:00 at the Hadarim Section of the International Convention Centre (ICC), 1 Zalman Shazar Avenue, Jerusalem. Click here for directions (Hebrew).

    - Participants should carefully read Appendix C/1 – Directives for Submission of Proposed Design, Stage 1 of the Competition, written on 6 March 2012, Update No. 1 – and follow the instructions and guidelines stipulated in it.

    - Reminder: Stage 1 is open to Israeli architects only. An Israeli architect is a citizen or permanent resident in Israel (being a person who holds a license for permanent residence in Israel in accordance with the Entry to Israel Law, 5712-1952), who is registered in the Register of Engineers and Architects in Israel and holds a license to practice architecture in Israel which is valid at the time of submission of the Proposal and has an active architectural firm in Israel.

    - It is emphasized that no identifying mark, apart from the Identification Label, shall be made on any of the documents and/or the materials you include in the submission. The only place where there will be identifying details of the party submitting the Proposal is on the Participation Form (appendix B) or the Participation Form for Multiple Participants (appendix B/1), as appropriate, and in the principles of the Architect Agreement, which shall be inserted solely into the Participation Envelope that shall remain sealed with the Trustee. None of the remaining materials to be submitted by the party submitting the Proposal, including the pages containing the written description, the sheets containing the Proposed design, the CD disk, the envelopes, both the Participation Envelope and the Submission Envelope, and the packaging of the parcel shall not contain any identifying particulars in order to safeguard the anonymity of the party submitting the Proposal.

    - Reminder: You must also bring the Submission Form included in the competition kit when delivering the proposal. Please note that the fields “Material delivered by” and “ID number” and “Signature of the person submitting the material” are intended only in the event that the submission is made by an emissary. In the event that the architect submits his proposal in person, in order to maintain anonymity he is asked not to fill in the name and details of the person submitting the proposal on the form and not to sign the form! In addition, the form will not be photocopied by the client.

    This reminder does not replace the instructions for submitting the proposal as expressed in the competition documents and as updated on the competition’s Internet website, including the updated documents for downloading from the site and the Questions & Answers.

    A Visit to the National Library Building

    Following requests from architects, the National Library will conduct a guided tour in its current building.The visit will take place next week and will include a presentation of the Library Renewal Project and a tour of the building, including areas not open to the public. Registration is required. Please register early as the number of places is limited. Additional visits will be scheduled depending on the demand.     The project to build the National Library reached a milestone with preliminary approval by the Jerusalem District Planning Commission to rezone the plot of land allocated for the building from public open space to suitable for a public building and to reset the boundaries of the site, the building lines within it, and the maximum construction height so as to afford considerable architectural freedom.

    Official Launch of the Renewal Project of The National Library of Israel

    A ceremony to launch the renewal project of The National Library of Israel was held on 27 March 2011 in the presence of President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Yad Hanadiv Chairman Lord Rothschild, Minister of Education Gideon Sa’ar, Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch, The Hebrew University President Prof. Menahem Ben Sasson, employees of The National Library of Israel and other dignitaries.

    At the ceremony, the President, Prime Minister, Lord Rothschild and others signed the Charter for the renewal of the National Library of Israel, a document expressing the vision, objectives and roles of the renewed library, and the aspiration for the Library’s continuous advancement.

    The renewal plan, based on the Master Plan for Renewal of The National Library, was presented at the ceremony. The Master Plan includes construction of a new building adjacent to the Knesset and the Israel Museum, and greater accessibility to the Library’s collections.

    The guests also visited an exhibition assembled for the ceremony: Unrivaled Unrevealed – Select Treasures of the National Library. The exhibition provided a glimpse into the range and wealth of the NLI’s holdings. Click here to see pictures from the exhibition.
