Ruth R. Wisse was, until her recent retirement, the Martin Peretz Professor of Yiddish Literature and Professor of Comparative literature at Harvard University. After receiving her Ph.D. from McGill University, she went on to found their Department of Jewish studies. She is a member of the editorial board of the Jewish Review of Books and is well known as a contributor to Commentary. She is also on the advisory board of NGO Monitor.
Recipient of a National Humanities Award (2007) for her scholarship and teaching, she also won the National Jewish Book Award for The Modern Jewish Canon: A Journey through Language and Culture (2000). She has published a number of anthologies of Yiddish literature, literary histories and political commentaries.
