Avishai Margalit is the Schulman Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the Hebrew University where he has been a member of faculty since 1970. He has held various visiting appointments at prestigious universities, serving as the George F. Kennan Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (2006-2011). A member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, he is known not only as a thinker and commentator on the contemporary human condition but also as a peace activist with profound observations on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
He is the recipient of numerous distinctions including the EMET prize (2007), and Israel Prize for Philosophy (2011). He was awarded the FIPH 2012 Philosophical Book Award from the Hannover Institute of Philosophical Research for his most recent book On Compromise and Rotten Compromises (2009).
