​Israel Publishing Statistics 2003

 

The National Library reports annual data about books published in Israel during 2003. The National Library is the deposit library of Israel, and receives, according to the “Books Act”, two copies of each book, journal, cassette or disk published in Israel. The publications are catalogued in the Library's catalogue and the Israel Union List.

​New Titles

During the previous year 7,128 new Israeli books titles were registered by the Legal Deposit Department. This number excludes other materials, such as periodical and non-print titles, which were received by the library. The Library's catalogue is the most comprehensive in Israel, and includes the vast majority of the titles published in Israel.

 

 

Titles by Type of Publishers

The breakdown of the 7,128 titles is as follows:
3,413 titles were published by Commercial publishing houses.
940 titles were published by the government and governmental institutes.
365 titles were published by Education institutes – universities, colleges and schools.
1,161 titles were published by associations, foundations, museums, community centers and other organizations.
1,249 titles were self-published by authors.

 

 

Titles by Sectors

The orthodox and ultra-orthodox sector was responsible for 1,765 titles, which comprised 25% of the total titles that were published in Israel in 2003.

 

 

Titles by Languages
Titles in some 38 languages are published in Israel. Naturally, most of them are Hebrew: 5,853 titles. The next common languages are English: 563 titles, Russian: 470 titles and Arabic: 103 titles. 37 Spanish titles were published in Israel last year, 31 in French and 28 in German. Only 13 Yiddish titles from Israel were registered, 4 in Amhari and 1 in Ladino. A few books were published in other languages, such as Georgian, Polish, Hungarian, Lithuanian end even one Japanese title.
 
 

 

 

 
Type of Publishers
The National Library's Legal Deposit Department maintains an extensive listing of Israeli publishers, including many minor publishers who issue only a few books a year. The Information recorded includes address, telephone and fax number of each publisher. The database includes 1,177 active publishers and organizations, which engage in publishing.
804 are commercial publishing houses, and 373 are non-commercial.
448 publishers published for the orthodox sector, and 3 for non-Jewish religious communities.
19 publishers published in Russian, and 5 in Arabic.
