Front Text - [2]:Omanut Series No. 1--Scenes from Jewish LifeThe artist, Bernard Picart, was born in Paris, 1663. At the age of sixteen he received the first prize at the Academy. In 1710 he left Paris and settled in Amsterdam, where he was converted from the Catholic to the Pritestant faith. He had many Jewish friends, and from them derived first hand knowledge of jewish customs and holidays, on which this series is based. Picart died at Amsterdam in 1733.To locate this area of blank sheets for pasting prints, place this sheet over blank, make pin-hole in two corners. The blank sheet can also be used as a mat by cutting out this center area.No. 1. "Search for Leaven" takes place the evening before Erev Pesach. Each nook and corner is searched by houswife and helper. The chometz is burned on the next morning.No 2. "Seder" - Tabel is set. On it are lamb-bone; Charosoth (apple and nut mixture, symbol for mortar); horseradish (symbol for hasty departure); and the cup for the Prophet Eliah.No. 3. "Rosh Hashanah" - Jewish New Year. The ram's horn (shofar) is blown after the reading of the Torah.No. 4. "Yom Kippur" - Day Of Atonement. In the Synagogue, where they spent nearly the whole day, the Jews wore the Kittel (white garment).No. 5. "Succoth" - The procession around the Synagogue, with the Ethrog Citrus and Lulav Palm, reciting the Hoshanoth (Thanksgiving).No. 6. "Succoth" - Thanksgiving dinner in the tents. The tents are used all seven days of the feast of the Tabernacles.No. 7. "Simchat Thorah" - Rejoicing of the Jewish people in a festive parade, with torches and music, over the event of finishing the reading of the fifth book of moses, and starting again to read the first book.No. 8. "Rite of Circumcision" - The eight day old boy is circumcised and named.No.9.
