Text on the back -Post Card - Carte Postale - Postkarte - Briefkaart - Cartolina Postale - Tarjeta Postal - ОТКРЬІТОЕ ПИСЬМО;Production period - before 1925-?;Front Period - UNKNOWN;Category - Synagogues;Description - This horizontal postcard depicts a photograph of the Italian Synagogue interior of Thessaloniki. This Synagogue was initially established by Italian Jews who arrived in the city in 1423. The building in the photograph was rebuilt in 1896, after an earlier one which was destroyed in the fire of Auguste 1890. It in turn was destroyed in the great fire of Auguste 1917. The Synagogue Interior is richly decorated and presents both of the principle centers of the Jewish liturgy: The Tevah and the Hekhal. The first one situated in the left foreground, is only partly visible: it is an elevated platform, made of marble in this case, where the Torah scroll is read. Two posing Jewish old men are sitting on its stairs and look toward us. On the background appears the second center, the Hekhal. It is a monumental wood ark, located in the East wall, so that when members of the community turn in its direction for praying, they turn in fact toward Jerusalem.
