This is a religious procession in the Judaism which symbolizes the covenant between God and the Children of Israel. The Circumcision is performed in the eighth day of the child's life, by a 'mohel', a circumciser, who appears in the center of the image, in profile. This one wears an overall, for hygiene reasons. As we can see in the picture, all the family takes part to the ritual. The man who holds the child on his knee during the ceremony is called the 'Sandaq' (godfather). He wears the 'tallit' (prayer shawl) and we can suppose that he is the child's paternal or maternal grandfather, as it is usually the case. The child's father is probably the man dressed with a dark suit, who helps the Sandak hold the baby. The child's mother stands in the foreground, before the Sandak, as all the women do.
