The Arabic word Fondouk means the place where shopkeepers store their goods and it also serves as an inn. It is the second meaning which is relevant for the picture: indeed the Fondouk was the place situated in front of the 'El Ghriba Synagogue' that received pilgrims for the annual gathering in mid-May.The morning of the procession, pilgrims and Djerbian people gathered together in the Fondouk as shown in the photograph. We see three Jewish old men, wearing the traditional burnous (a long cloak of coarse woolen fabric worn by Berbers and Arabs throughout North Africa), and the chechia (traditional men's headdress in Tunisia). They sit with prayer books in their hands. The annual pilgrimage occurs in the The 33th day after Passover (at Lag Ba'omer). The island of Djerba receives eve;Back Handwritten Text - 20 -
