This image is a Rosh Hashana card that was created in 1945 with a very strong and moving message. The Hebrew writing at the top reads: “A year of immigration, building, and rebirth in our country and healing to the House of Israel.” Other than the date in the bottom right and the text stating that it was printed in Kibbutz Shamir, the card is blank.
The New Year’s greeting from the members of the kibbutz does not focus on the traditional Rosh Hashana themes of forgiveness and redemption but rather on the development of the community in the Land of Israel through immigration and building. The second line of the card, wishing for healing for the Jewish people, is especially moving, since the card was printed only three months after the end of the Second World War.

Kibbutz Shamir - Kibbutz Shamir was founded in 1944 by members of the youth movement Hashomer Hatzair, including Sara Braverman. After the War of Independence, the border between Syria and Israel was less than half a mile away from the edge of the kibbutz.
