Examination of Original Manuscripts: Terms and Conditions

Terms and Conditions

  • Do not take pictures of the manuscript without written permission from the Manuscripts Department.

Keep the protocol for the handling of manuscripts, as follows:

  • Minimize handling of the pages. Parchment and paper are very sensitive to moisture and oils from hands and the pages may be damaged by them.
  • Use gloves. In special cases where gloves cannot be used, ensure that your hands are freshly washed and dried.
  • Food and drink are not allowed in the proximity of the manuscript or in the rare books reading room.
  • Always use appropriate support (weights/foam wedges/adjustable book cushions) while the manuscript is open.
  • Ensure that the support is adjusted to the different openings of the manuscript.
  • The manuscript should not be opened any wider than the angle it can freely maintain.
  • Use the available book weights together with a gentle opening angle provided by the book supports. The manuscript must not be held open with heavy objects, hands, arms, other books, etc. If more supports or book weights are required, please ask staff to supply them.
  • No objects (paper, pencils, note pads, etc.) may be placed between the pages of the manuscript.
  • Do not use any type of paper clip.
  • Refrain from touching the surface of the ink or illuminations.
  • Do not fold the corners of the pages.
  • Only pencils may be used to take notes in the proximity of the manuscript or in the rare books reading room. It is forbidden to use ink pens.
  • Work on a clean surface.
  • Notify the supervising librarian if you need to leave the room. Do not leave the book unattended.

The manuscript was documented and photographed before it was brought to you. You are responsible for any damage to the book while it is under your supervision.

All damage to the materials of the book or manuscript is cumulative.
Bad handling will rapidly deteriorate the condition of the book.
