 The Ketubot Collection

The David and Fela Shapell Family Digitization Project
Jewish law requires the groom to furnish his bride with a written contract guaranteeing her financial rights in the event of his death or in the case of divorce. Over the generations, diverse local customs have also been manifested in the texts and illustrations of ketubot (wedding contracts).
Since the ketuba is a legal document, it includes precise details of dates and place names, thereby providing a rich source for the study of Jewish history, customs and art.
