A new CD featuring works by the composer Jaromir Weinberger has recently been released. The CD is titled "Kammer und Orgelmusik" (chamber music and music for the pipe organ).
Weinberger, a Jewish composer, was born in Czechoslovakia. He was one of Germany's greatest composers in the first half of the 20th century, and was made famous by his opera "Schwanda the Bagpiper". The opera was translated into 15 languages and was performed many times. In 1939 Weinberger was forced to flee to the United States.
In 1967 Jaromir Weinberger took his own life. In his will he bequeathed his works to his relative Yehuda Polchak. About ten years ago, the family donated the collection to the National Library in memory of Weinberger and Polchak. Many of Weinberger's works were never published and even fewer were recorded. This CD is an invaluable contribution to the field of Jewish-artistic music in the period between the two world wars. The CD was released in Germany by DEUTSCHLANDFUNK.
