For two Pianos and Percussion, 1984 (publisher: IMI 1988)
Islossning – Breaking the Bonds of Ice was first performed in 1985. The second performance of the piece took place in 1989 at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and was recorded by Israel Broadcasting Authority.
"Islossning" is the Swedish word for the short period between winter and spring when the ice covering the rivers, lakes and the sea begin to melt and new forces of life awake. The title was chosen as a metaphoric description of an emotional breakthrough and is not to be taken literally.
The ensemble is treated as a sonoric unity where the pianos are treated as melodic and percussive instruments and the percussion section produces melodies as well as percussive sounds. Small melodic cells, that can be characterized as waves of energy, bounce back and forth between the instruments. In this manner the energetic material bursts out and creates the overwhelming impression of the forces of nature, or rather – human elementary forces of new life.
