Night at the Library

The National Library of Israel and GLAM

Nighttime article-writing marathons are only part of the adventure. The National Library is joining forces with Wikimedia Israel as part of the international GLAM-Wiki Initiative (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums with Wikipedia). The worldwide collaboration is designed to help leading global cultural institutions share their rich resources with the world with the guarantee of high standards of accuracy through collaboration with experienced Wikipedia editors.
The worldwide project teams culture and memory institutions with Wikipedia editors to maximize far-reaching access to their knowledge. NLI has over 5 million items encompassing books, archives, periodicals, personal archives, music, maps, photographs and audio recordings, many of which are already digitized and available to view online.  By featuring some of these items on Wikipedia, we are able to present our source materials on one of the world's most trafficked search sites. NLI then becomes much more than a repository of items -- we become a primary information channel for the global public.  The project fosters communication with the broad user community, providing for enhanced categorization of materials through participation in crowdsourcing activities.
Like other institutions in the international GLAM network, NLI has welcomed its own “Wikipedian in Residence” who works with NLI archivists and curators to upload NLI images and edit articles for Wikimedia and Wikipedia.  Special nighttime marathon article-writing events take place at NLI with the professional guidance of library staff, drawing scores of content experts eager to discover new treasures to feature.  The project has already generated and enhanced more than 150 Wikipedia articles, and 2000 images have been loaded onto Wikimedia Commons, with a concentration on manuscripts and maps from NLI’s Laor Cartography collection and photographs from NLI’s Abraham Schwadron collection
