Ruth Gavison is the Haim H. Cohn Professor Emerita of Human Rights at the Hebrew University. Her areas of research include legal theory, state and religion, human rights, political theory, constitutional law, religion and politics, and Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. A visitor at various universities including Yale, Princeton and NYU, she is also a founding member and former chair and president of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel. Since 2005, she has served as founding president of Metzilah – the Center for Zionist, Jewish, Liberal and Humanist Thought.
Her many prestigious prizes and awards include the Cheshin Prize for Excellence in Research (2006), the EMET Prize for Law and Political Science (2003) and honorary doctorate from JTS (2003) and the Israel Prize for Legal Research (2011).
