This is a comic strip entitled “Hofni the Dreamer and his Adventures,” that was featured in the children’s newspaper Eden in 1925 just before Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. The cartoon depicts Hofni’s Rosh Hashanah. In the first illustration Hofni is sitting with his family at the Rosh Hashanah meal. Later, he falls asleep and dreams that his is surrounded by mounds of ice cream, chocolate, and sweets. He dreams of climbing on a tree of chocolate fruit and throwing down chocolate to the children below, eating ice cream flowing from taps, and eating a meal of sweet foods. He is woken abruptly from this dream, when his mother shakes him telling him that it is time for the Rosh Hashanah services. Hofni, who in all of these cartoon strips always dreams about life in Israel, is imagining Israel as a Land of Ice Cream and Chocolate in contrast to the biblical metaphor of Israel as a Land of Milk and Honey.
