This is the cover of the sheet music for the composition Mourning the Loss of Dr. Herzl written by Nohum Yasnagorodsky after the death of Theodor Herzl.
Nohum Yasnagorodsky was born in Yasnogorodsk, near Kiev, and his family name was derived from the name of the town. Nohum did not receive any formal education except for attending cheder (Jewish primary school), but he became famous for his songs, for which he wrote both the words and music. He also worked as a journalist in Kiev. He focused on Jewish topics in both his articles and his songs, telling of the lives of members of the Jewish community. Nohum was killed during a pogrom in Kiev in either 1906 or 1914 (the exact date is unknown). His musical compositions are archived in the public libraries in Kiev and St. Petersburg.
The cover design includes a portrait of Theodor Herzl surrounded by tree branches. Information on the cover is written in Hebrew and Russian. Theodor (Binyamin Ze’ev) Herzl (1860–1904) was the visionary behind modern Zionism. His death was mourned by Jews around the world.
