This map, created in 1578, shows the Garden of Eden and the surrounding areas. The title of the map written in Latin is “Hoc schema et descriptio referens Orti Eden situm” (this figure is a description of the location of the Garden of Eden). It was drawn by Thomas Guarinus and appears in a Bible he produced in Basel, Switzerland. The map shows the Middle East as described in the Book of Genesis (Bereshit), including northern Mesopotamia, Egypt, Babylon, and Gaza. It also shows the many rivers mentioned, including the Euphrates, the Nile, and the Tigris.
The maps also depicts a variety of animals and trees, for example an elephant, a camel, an oryx (or maybe a unicorn), a wolf, and a rhinoceros. In the centre of the map, there are two people, probably Adam and Eve, standing under a tree. In the bottom left, the Israelites can be seen crossing the Red Sea. Moses, who is leading the Israelites, has horns on his head, as often shown in medieval Christian drawings. The map includes a few cities such as Gaza and Babylon, which are depicted with European-style architecture.
The map is obviously not scientifically accurate and depicts a biblical story rather than a geographical description of the area.
