An invitation to piyut

Background

The website of piyut and prayer is a unique and innovative project whose purpose is to preserve and revive traditions, songs, prayers and Jewish music that are thousands of years old. The site, operating since 2005, provides the public with access to well-known and lesser-known productions alike, and spreads them daily both in Israel and across the world in order to present a multi-cultural and diverse picture. Today, the website is being expanded and reconstructed in cooperation with the National Library of Israel.
The cultural wealth and the platform given to each tradition together comprise the soundtrack of Jewish culture, and the backbone of liturgical and musical lore. Thus, Morocco meets Lithuania, Sana’a talks with İzmir, the Western and Eastern tunes all integrate harmoniously with the tunes of Israel, and thousands of performances of Jewish music become live and relevant
Close to one thousand songs and piyutim, thousands of productions and hundreds of essays comprise this store of Jewish poetry and prayer, categorized according to the yearly cycle, the circle of life and according to geographical traditions. Hundreds of thousands of internet users from Israel and abroad enter this immense pool of information every year, and become acquainted with the vast cultural wealth stored within it. The users find their own tradition, the sounds of their youth, and often meet Jewish traditions from around the globe for the first time in their lives.
For the past decade, the website has been providing prayers and songs for those searching for the right words, delivering rare performances to those seeking a tune expressing the right mood, and accompanying the Jewish people with all its strata, in a years-long soundtrack of meaning

Construct the largest and most comprehensive database in its field -
Over the past ten years, the website’s team has invested great effort in the collection of texts, compositions and performances from all traditions. The extensive research brought many tunes and texts which had been forgotten over the years back to life. The effect of this great wealth of culture was made possible due to the digital accessibility of the content, its distribution both across Israel and abroad, and its translation into foreign languages. As of today, the website stands at the forefront of Jewish music websites and it is of great cultural influence

Raise a new generation of young leaders influenced by traditions of Jewish music -
Tradition becomes essential and relevant when it serves as a useful tool for the integration of communities, leaders and children. The road to children’s hearts is through the training of teachers, the writing of unique educational programs and the adaptation of the content for various age groups. The website of piyut and prayer develops designated content for different age groups and works in cooperation with the Ministry of Education to train staff in the field. The reality in which students reenact old traditions broadly influences their surroundings

Establish music as a bridging element in Israeli society – shitufpiyut -
The different strata of the Jewish soundtrack are woven into each other due to the astounding contribution of internet users from different backgrounds and traditions. The website offers them an advanced system through which they are invited to share texts, performances and tunes from their traditions and of their own composition. This contribution is added to the existing material in the website and together presents a huge variety of rare items. Thus, the community of the website’s users becomes exposed to the most authentic multiculturalism in Israeli society and the entire Jewish world

strengthen the connection with communities in North America -
The largest and most varied Jewish community outside the State of Israel lives and grows in North America. The purpose of this project is to strengthen the connection between these communities themselves as well as their connection the State of Israel. The prayer rituals in the different communities express the wealth prevalent today in American Jewry, and we wish, alongside B’nai Jeshurun synagogue in New York City, to transform this variety into a wide-spanned database which employs music and song as a means for developing multiculturalism. The database contains texts, tunes, and performances of different movements and traditions, and presents a full and authentic picture of what is being done in the field. This database is completed by conducting activities with .community-leaders in the field. In the past five years, Jewish music has had true effect in North America
