Digitization of Cyrillic Language Catalogues

 Digitization of Cyrillic Language Catalogues

The first phase of the project included the digitization of the monographic card catalogues, while the second phase dealt with the digitization of the Cyrillic periodicals card catalogue. Currently, all the information regarding materials in the Cyrillic languages found in the Library is accessible via the Library website.
Alongside the materials in the field of Jewish Studies, which are the heart of the National Library's collections, these catalogues include canonical Russian literature important to readers of the Russian language.   This project presented the staff with the opportunity to update the hundred year-old process by which these card catalogues have been organized, and in doing so, many items in the original catalogue were checked, verified, and corrected.

It should be noted that several of the card catalogues were written at the beginning of the 20th century, and as such are themselves worthy of preservation at the National Library.
Project Goals:
The project’s immediate goal was to make the Library’s Cyrillic language treasures, especially in the Russian language, available to the public as quickly as possible; until now, readers had to visit the library in person in order to access these items.

Additional Project Goals:
• To encourage the use of Cyrillic materials and to increase their loans and reference
• To improve the process by which materials are located, and to ease the loan process inside and outside the Library with the help of modern cataloguing processes and online accessibility
• To improve preservation processes (digitally catalogued materials can be tracked more efficiently)

Project Timetable:
Work began in September 2010. The initial date of completion was set for December 2011, however this date was reevaluated following changes to the original plan, and consequently the project was completed in February 2011.
