Would You Like to Know More? World Health Day - World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated every year on April 7 under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO), a specialised agency of the United Nations. World Health Day, first held on 1950, is seen as an opportunity by the WHO to draw worldwide attention to a different topic of major importance to global health each year. Some of the past themes have been the eradication of polio, food safety, and depression. Israel became a member of the WHO in 1949. Recently, the WHO has criticised Israel for the healthcare it provides for Palestinians and Arab residents of the Golan Heights. Health in Israel - Israel’s high-quality health services, top-quality medical technology and research, modern hospital facilities, and impressive ratio of doctors all contribute to the high standard of health available to all citizens of the country. The Ministry of Health is in charge of setting health policy and running the public health services. The government owns and runs several hospitals. Medical services are provided through four health insurance companies called kupot cholim, sick funds. Israel has universal health care and participation is mandatory. The high level of medical care and research has led to Israel ranking 8th in the world in life expectancy, ahead of the United States and the United Kingdom. Israel also provides health expertise to developing countries around the world and to those who are suffering from ailments that cannot be treated in their home countries. Recently, Israel has been responsible for bringing Syrians who have been wounded in the Syrian civil war into Israel to provide them with much needed medical services.
