The Edelstein Center, established in 1980, encourages research into the history and philosophy of science and technology, and supports the teaching of the history of science, technology and medicine. Its research programs include the history and philosophy of modern physics and the history of chemical technology. The center encourages research based on the resources of The Einstein Archive, the Quantum Archive (housed at the center), and the Edelstein collection on the History of Dyeing and Chemical Technology. The center also contributes to a number of programs in other countries.
The center offers post-doctoral fellowships, short-term senior fellowships, and the Edelstein International Fellowship in the history of chemical technology and chemical sciences. Each year it organizes an international workshop (in collaboration with Tel-Aviv University and the Jerusalem Van-Leer Institute), most recently “Models of Critique” (1996), “Eugenics” (1997), “Ernst Cassirer” (1998), “Science and Secularization” (1999), “Conceptual Foundations of Statistical Mechanics” (2000) and “History of Mathematics in the Last 25 Years: New Deparures, New Questions, New Ideas” (May 2001). The center also supports the Bar-Hillel Colloquium, and holds its own colloquium, as well as occasional workshops, e.g., “The Environment: Historical Context and Present Day Perspectives” (1999). In January 2001, the center launched the journal Aleph: Historical Studies in Science and Judaism, jointly with the Institute of Jewish Studies.
The center constitutes a bridge between the Faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences, Science and Medicine, and works closely with institutions following similar interests in Europe and North America.
